COVID-19 is affecting us all. One of the most vulnerable yet least remembered groups is the 2.3 million men and women who are currently incarcerated in the United States. Without the ability to social distance, quarantine, or even access good healthcare, these human beings are at high risk of contracting the disease and dying if governments do not act fast.
One of the most pressing remedies is to decarcerate; dramatically reducing the bloated prison population to free up space to quarantine and social distance. Secondly, jails and prisons must provide free hand sanitizer and medical care to individuals under their care, release all incarcerated people who test positive to external facilities, and speed up testing and releasing in all jails and prisons across the country.
