GETTING ALL YOUR HOMIES TO HATE PRISONS.
- a guide by the Forgive Everyone Collective -
What does this guide aim to accomplish?
This guide aims to provide you with the information, statistics, and basic tactics needed to effectively get your homies on board with prison abolition. It is grounded both in hard facts, real stories, and abolitionist imaginations of the future. We hope it helps you get closer to getting all your homies to hate prisons.
Why do we need to talk to our homies about police and prison abolition?
Discussions of abolition, whether it be abolition of slavery in the mid-1800s, or the more recent conversations of Defunding or Abolishing the police were never meant to be siloed or hidden. These concepts are meant to be shared to build community and consensus around the need to entirely transform our justice system.
To create real transformative change at a systemic level, we need full buy-in and support from our family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. From our community. Without that support and collective engagement with abolitionist issues, any hope of achieving true abolition will be lost.
Secondly, community building is an invaluable part of decreasing the presence and power of police. When we talk to the people proximate to us about abolition, get them on board, and collaborate with them to develop action plans that keep our community safe, we decrease the power and presence of police intervention in our neighborhoods.
Take your time to work through this guide. Watch, read, listen, and learn with intention. Give yourself time to absorb and think on the information. Once you have absorbed it, apply it, and spread the vision of abolition in your community.
